A short time ago my friend Sarah got started on a form of exercise called Nia. She immediately insisted that it was right up my alley and that I needed to try it immediately.
So I did and it was and she was totally correct. I LOVED IT!
My friends, Richelle, Bridget and myself went to a place in Park Slope. It was just a simple, but gorgeous brownstone that also functions as a bed and breakfast.
From the moment our teacher, Angela began talking, all three of us were hooked.
Nia is a combination of the healing arts, the dance arts and martial arts. Somehow they all come together to make this really fluid, goddess-like, hippie dance stuff that emphasizes the joy of movement. I had a big stupid grin on my face the entire time and there were one or two moments where I swear I almost cried with joy.
It was so much fun! And it is surprisingly a wicked workout. Your body is moving nonstop for an hour or so and I was sweating like crazy. I have never actually "enjoyed" a workout before, but I didn't want to stop this one. The entire idea is to have lots of fun and be expressive and silly. There is no right or wrong way to do it.
And the best part was that she decided our first class was free! So we used our class money to have some margaritas after, but I digress.
Guys, I think this is really more suited to the ladies out there. Just being honest. But I highly recommend it as both a bit of fun and also a great workout that you'll really enjoy!
Here is a video explaining a little about Nia. The woman in it looks like something out of Bladerunner.
